It gets in at a flashing, a penetration, or a lifted edge, then travels along a rafter or the underside of the sheathing before it finds somewhere to drop. This is why so many roof repairs fail — someone sealed the ceiling stain's nearest neighbour and the actual entry point is eight feet uphill.

A repair that starts with sealant rather than diagnosis is a guess. Sometimes the guess works. More often the stain reappears in the next serious rain and the money is gone.
